Was very disappointed in this cookbook. My expections were that the recipes would add the flavors to American food. Yet most of the recipes in this book you already have in the other cookbooks you have. Mac and cheese same old, same old. I can just add spices to my recipe and have a better one than this book. Too many of the recipes were just like that no new spices, no new anything, just mostly American food authored by someone that is East Indian. Have already sold my copy, it wasn’t worth the shelf space.

So I probably wouldn’t have bought this book had my daughter not burnt the library’s copy on the stove!! I do like Suvir Saran’s writing, I tried the parsnip soup and I have to say it was disgusting, I threw the whole pot away, the other dishes look yummy though and I will definetly be trying out a few more. I also checked out Indian Home Cooking by Suvir Saran and tried a few dishes from that and they were delicious.

I borrowed the book from the library to check it out. One of the few books that I felt I would go back to periodically. I have decided to purchase the book. Recipes are simple, the ingredients are basically what an Indian would stock at home, seemed to me that the food would taste fresh and simple. I also like the author’s writing – the little snippets that he provides with the recipes.

Awesome! In the one month since I received American Masala, I have already made the potato and pea poha every weekend.

I enjoyed reading Chef Suvir’s stories that go with each recipe.
